Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) is known as a rejuvenative herb, helping to enhance body strength and immunity, and is used to help manage auto-immune disorders. Ashwagandha will help to counter fatigue and tiredness, is good for neurological disorders, helps to improve sleep, counters anxiety and stress, has anti-aging properties and also has aphrodisiac qualities. According to Ayurvedic Principles of Pharmacology, Ashwagandha has energetics which are pungent, bitter and astringent in taste, is hot in potency, has a pungent post-digestive effect at the tissue level, and has oily and lightness qualities. Based on these energetics it is known to balance all three doshas, but especially Kapha and PItta.

Brahmi:

Bacopa Monnieri (Brahmi) is known for its prime action on the nervous system and is useful in managing stress, anxiety, helping with memory difficulties and is good for heart health. In Ayurveda, brahmi has energetics which are bitter, hot in potency, with a pungent post-digestive affect, and it balances both Kapha and Vata. Active constituents include Brahmine and various saponins.

Pippali:

Piper Longum (Long Pepper, Pippali) is best known for its antioxidant qualities, it also has a rejuvenating quality, and helps to neutralise toxins (Ama). Long pepper is good for respiratory system ailments and for digestion, helping to improve the digestive fire. In Ayurveda, Long Pepper has energetics which are pungent in taste, hot in potency and has a sweet post-digestive effect (PDE). It has a sharp quality and helps to balance all three doshas, but more so for Kapha and Vata. Piperine is the main active constituent.

Arjuna:

Terminalia Arjuna (Arjuna) is known for its anti-oxidant and cardiotonic qualities, helping to manage high blood pressure and tachycardia. In Ayurveda, Arjuna has energetics which are astringent in taste, cold in potency, has a pungent postdigestive effect (PDE) and helps to balance both Kapha and Pitta. Dosage 1-2g.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is about finding balance in life.

It looks at the health of the mind, body and spirit together, working to restore balance so you can live your best life.

Originating in Ancient India, the Ayurveda health system has been around for over 5,000 years. Its holistic approach is now recognised all over the world, including by the World Health Organisation.

In Ayurveda, true health is achieving the perfect balance of three energies or doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Ayurveda literally means "the art of living wisely" or "the science of life and longevity". It is a profound science of living that encompasses the whole of life and relates the individual to the universe and consider mind, body and spirit together. It is a holistic system of healing in the truest sense.

Ayurveda is timeless - it has existed for over 5000 years but yet it still applies to modern day life. Today it is recognised by the World Health Organisation as a natural health care system. The key to its longevity is because Ayurveda is logical. An early description given in the Charaka Samhita (the earliest Ayurvedic literature) written circa 150BCE-100CE says: "It is called Ayurveda because it tells us which substances, qualities and actions are life enhancing, and which are not."

In general, Ayurveda teaches that if life is lived in accordance with prakruti, or basic body-mind constitution, then a natural youthfulness is maintained throughout life. According to Ayurveda, health is a perfect state of balance between the body's three fundamental energies or doshas (vata, pitta, kapha) and an equally vital balance among body, mind and soul or consciousness. In working to create health, Ayurveda therefore takes in to consideration all these different levels of life and how they are interconnected.

Ayurveda teaches us that we have a constitution, our own mix of the doshas, which is our individual psychobiological makeup. In modern terms we speak of this blue print as our inherited genetic code,...
